Britain and Cuba: Information
This website has been set up by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk.
The Cuba Solidarity Campaign works in the UK against the United States blockade of Cuba, and for the Cuban peoples’ right to self-determination and sovereignty.
This is a nationwide campaign to put Cuba firmly on the agenda of the next UK Parliament. The General Election will see the largest influx of new MPs in a generation and we need your help to contact them. We know that from past campaigns that candidates respond better if they are contacted by someone who lives in their constituency. And this is the time to contact them when they are looking for something from you – your vote.
FAQs
What is the campaign about?
We are asking Prospective Parliamentary Candidates whether they support better relations with Cuba. We need your help to do this. This is a massive exercise in participatory democracy. All candidates want people to vote for them – this is your chance to find out their views and help us build support against the blockade in the next UK Parliament.
Who are the candidates?
There will be over 2,500 candidates standing at the General Election for 646 seats in the House of Commons. We want to reach as many as possible in order to put Cuba on the political agenda.
What happens when my candidate/s respond?
It is really important that you forward any responses you receive to campaigns@britainandcuba.org. We intend to make candidates responses public so it is really important that you send us their responses.
I know somebody standing in my constituency who isn’t listed. Why not?
We have got the details of over 2,000 Prospective Parliamentary Candidates. If you know of someone who is standing in your constituency, and we haven’t included them, then send us their details to campaigns@britainandcuba.org.
The details of candidates in my constituency are wrong. How do I change them?
If any details are wrong such as wrong party or name spelt wrong then let us know at campaigns@britainandcuba.org and we’ll get them fixed.
I got an email back from one of the people saying they are not standing as a candidate and not to contact them. What’s happened here?
We’ve tried to be as accurate as possible in our collation of the candidates’ details. Candidates do drop out and will keep dropping out until the close of nominations. If someone indicates that they’re not a candidate let us know and we’ll remove their details from the website.
I don’t want to contact Candidate B. How can I do this?
Just untick the box next to their name. Only candidates with ticked boxes next to their name will receive an email from you. It is important that we contact as many candidates as possible though.
My postcode returns the wrong constituency. Why is this?
The 2010 General Election is being fought on different constituency boundaries. Over 400 constituencies have had boundary alterations in one way or another so you may find yourself voting in a different constituency than you did in the 2005 Election.
When is the General Election?
We don’t know yet. However, it has to be held by Thursday 3rd June 2010.
What else can I do to help?
Lots. You can join the Cuba Solidarity Campaign. You can join by phoning 0208 800 0155 or by going to our website – www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk. We are a membership based campaign that relies on individual members and trade union support to carry on with our work. Joining the Cuba Solidarity Campaign is the best way to support the Cuban people and help continue the campaign against the illegal blockade.
You can tell your friends/colleagues/trade union members about this campaign. We want to reach as many candidates as possible – to do this we need to have people in every constituency in the UK contact their candidates.
You can make a donation to help the work of www.britainandcuba.org and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign
You can raise the question of Britain/Cuba relations with your candidates by phone, letter or by going to local meetings. You could also write a letter to your local paper.
You can get in touch with us at campaigns@britainandcuba.org with your suggestions and ideas to build better relations between Britain and Cuba.
