What next for Britain and Cuba ?

In her reply to a constituent Stella Creasy, Labour candidate for Walthamstow, recognised the importance of our efforts to work to improve Britain’s relationship with Cuba.

‘You will also be pleased to know several other Walthamstow residents have also raised this with me showing the grassroots support for action on this point. I have no doubt that this is replicated across the country as I know how hard the CSC has worked to lobby and raise awareness as to value of engagement with Cuba for the UK.’

The Britain and Cuba campaign has seen over 2000 candidates contacted by individuals in each constituency asking them one direct question

‘If elected as an MP would you support better relations between the UK and Cuba?’

The results are excellent. Over 92% of all the candidates who responded supported improved relations, with 62% strongly upporting better relations without conditions.

Now we have to turn this clear message into a reality. And that means working with every possible MP from any party. Whatever the colour of the new Government the message is the same - we want Britain to have an improved relationship with Cuba based on mutual respect and understanding.

So the Britain and Cuba campaign does not end here. We will soon be publishing a full report of the findings and sending copies to every member of the new parliament. We will follow this up with one to one meetings and delegations. We will promote questions, debate and exchanges between parliamentarians here and in Cuba.

We want to get a clear message across that the people of Britain no longer want to follow a failed US policy of isolation, blockade and aggression towards Cuba. Instead we want a policy of constructive engagement which recognises our differences but at the same time promotes, trade, cultural and scientific exchange and understanding. The fact is that the people of Britain and Cuba have so much more in common than we have our differences.

We will be organising meetings up and down the country with MPs, trade Unions and the public all aiming to get the British Government to build a better more respectful relationship with Cuba.

We will need your help with this

  • we need financial assistance as well as your involvement. If you can make a donation however small then please do so.
  • if you are not already a member of Cuba Solidarity Campaign then do please join.
  • if you are involved in your trade union branch please ask them to affiliate

Becoming part of CSC is by far the best way of helping Cuba.
